The steps

  1. 01Hang the bag on one hook you can find in the dark. Same hook after every trip. If you have to hunt for it, it is not packed.
  2. 02Charger, IDs, insurance card, and a photo of the night sheet or the handoff card. Those four go in before anything else.
  3. 03A change of clothes for you, snacks that do not need a fridge, and a toothbrush. Put a spare phone cable in the same pouch as the toiletries.
  4. 04For a birth, copy the hospital or birth center list onto paper. Pack that list. Then stop. Their list outranks this card.The birth place's list is the one the desk expects. This card is the backup if they never handed you one.
  5. 05For a weekend away: one outfit a day plus one spare. Medicines stay in the bottle they came in, with the label you can read.
  6. 06For a child: the sleep thing, one warmer layer than the forecast, and a photo of the fridge sheet on your phone.
  7. 07If labor starts, take the bag and the night sheet. Do not repack in the driveway.
  8. 08If you are the one leaving, the other adult already has the three things written down. A bag without that handoff is half a plan.
