The steps

- 01Practice once on a night no one is waiting. A funeral morning is a bad classroom.
- 02Collar up. Wide end on your right, hanging about twice as far down as the narrow end.
- 03Cross the wide end over the narrow end.
- 04Bring the wide end up through the loop at your neck, then down in front.
- 05Cross the wide end over the front again, toward your left.
- 06Bring the wide end up through the neck loop once more.
- 07Tuck the wide end down through the knot in front. A small dimple under the knot is the finish, not a second knot.That pass through the front of the knot is the whole trick. A second knot on top is how it comes out fat and crooked.
- 08Hold the narrow end and slide the knot up to the collar. The wide tip should land near the belt.
- 09Fold the collar down. If it sits crooked, loosen and slide. Do not untie the whole thing in the car.
